They’ve changed everything else in the app, but Instagram still doesn’t allow us to place links in our posts. We all have to resort to “click the link in my bio” call to action on posts to provide our audience with more information. Instagram limits you to only one link in your bio so your options are to regularly change the link to match your current post, or link to a page that provides multiple links. LinkTree has emerged as one of the most popular options for creating that type of multi-link page, but there is a better solution that will benefit your business!
What is LinkTree?
LinkTree is a service that enables you to create a landing page with multiple links. There is a free plan that provides limited control, and paid plans that allow for more creative options and analytics. Most users set up a landing page that includes a link to their website, their blog, product catalogs, and their other social media profiles.
Here’s why you should not use LinkTree:
People are not going to YOUR website.
When you use LinkTree, you are sending that traffic to their website, not your own. Many writers on this topic suggest that you’re missing out on better search rankings in Google by sending people to LinkTree, however (Search Engine Optimization) experts believe Google does not use direct site traffic as a ranking factor. Regardless, getting people directly to YOUR website is always a good idea! LinkTree represents an extra step and there’s no guarantee people will click through from there to your website.
Your company branding is missing.
If you use the free version of LinkedIn, and most people do, you have limited control over the colors, fonts, and other design elements. People arriving at your landing page will encounter an experience that looks nothing like your own brand. Yes, you have more options if you are on a paid plan, but you have already invested time and money in your own website to ensure it builds and promotes your own brand. Why pay twice? Ultimately your own website offers you the most control over how your brand is represented
Build a link bio page on your website instead.
The better alternative to LinkTree is to build a landing page directly on your website. Here’s what to include:
- A link to your home page. (We recommend keeping this page hidden from your main menu, as it may confuse website visitors that don’t come from this link.)
- A link to your lead magnet (if you have one.)
- A link to your product catalog
- A link to your most recent blog (or any blogs, videos or articles that you might be referencing in your content.)
- Links to other social media platforms
Really, the options are limitless based on your business, your goals, your offerings, current campaigns, etc. The point is, you can use one landing page FOR FREE on your website to direct your audience wherever you want them to go with that one live link you get on Instagram. And you don’t have to stop there, you can use that new link on any of your social channels.
You can check out the bio link landing page we created as an example. You can see our page includes the same Think Big Go Local brand colors, fonts, and styles used throughout the rest of our website. We’ve done this for many of our clients and they love it!
